Watermelon Margarita Recipes: 7 Refreshing Twists on the Classic
There is no cocktail more synonymous with summer than the watermelon margarita. It's pink, it's pretty, and when it's made right, it tastes like someone blended August into a glass. The watermelon margarita has earned its place at every rooftop party, beach bonfire, and backyard cookout for good reason — watermelon and tequila are one of those rare combinations that just work. They enhance each other in ways neither can achieve alone.
The trouble with most watermelon margaritas you'll find at bars or in premixed bottles is the sugar load. A standard watermelon margarita at a restaurant can run 30–45 grams of sugar per drink, sometimes more. The morning-after headache you blame on the tequila? Often it's actually the sugar. Alcohol dehydrates you, and high-sugar mixers compound that dehydration. For the full breakdown, read our guide to hydrating cocktails.
OFTN built the Watermelon Margarita mix specifically to solve this. We wanted a drink that tasted like the real thing — bright, sweet, tart, with that deep pink color — but that didn't dump a mountain of sugar into your system. Our mix uses real fruit flavor, electrolytes to help you stay hydrated while you drink, and B vitamins to support your body through the night. One sachet, shaken with tequila and ice, and you have a margarita that actually makes sense for how you want to live.
Below are seven watermelon margarita recipes using OFTN mix. We've got the classic, a frozen version, a spicy build, a party pitcher, a mocktail, and a couple of unexpected twists. Why Watermelon and Tequila Work So Well
Watermelon has an incredibly high water content — about 92% — which is part of why it pairs so naturally with tequila. The lightness of the fruit doesn't compete with the agave notes in a good blanco tequila; instead, it lets them shine. Add citrus — lime being the classic choice — and you've got a drink with a gorgeous balance of sweet, tart, and earthy. The salt rim enhances sweetness and suppresses bitterness. If you've been skipping the salt, try it once. You'll never go back.
Recipe 1: The Classic Watermelon Margarita
- 1 sachet OFTN Watermelon Margarita mix
- 2 oz blanco tequila
- 0.5 oz triple sec or orange liqueur
- Ice
- Salt or Tajin rim
- Garnish: watermelon wedge, lime wheel
Instructions: Salt (or Tajin) your rim by rubbing a lime wedge around the glass edge and dipping in salt. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, add the tequila, triple sec, and OFTN Watermelon Margarita mix. Shake hard for 15 seconds and strain into your glass over fresh ice. Garnish and serve. Recipe 2: Frozen Watermelon Margarita
- 1 sachet OFTN Watermelon Margarita mix
- 2 oz tequila
- 2 cups frozen watermelon chunks (or regular ice)
- Juice of half a lime
- Tajin rim optional
Instructions: Blend everything together until smooth. The frozen watermelon chunks work better than regular ice because they add flavor as they blend. Pour into your salt-rimmed glass and garnish with a small watermelon triangle on the rim.
Recipe 3: Spicy Watermelon Margarita
- 1 sachet OFTN Watermelon Margarita mix
- 2 oz tequila
- 3 slices fresh jalapeño
- 0.5 oz fresh lime juice
- Ice
- Tajin and chili salt rim
Instructions: Muddle jalapeño slices in your shaker. Add ice, tequila, OFTN mix, and lime juice. Shake vigorously, double-strain into your rimmed glass over ice. The double straining removes the jalapeño seeds and pulp while keeping the heat. Adjust spice level by muddling fewer or more slices.
Recipe 4: Watermelon Margarita Mocktail
- 1 sachet OFTN Watermelon Margarita mix
- 4 oz sparkling water
- Juice of half a lime
- Ice
- Salt or Tajin rim
Instructions: This mocktail holds its own against any alcoholic version. The electrolytes in the OFTN mix mean you're genuinely hydrating while you sip. Add the mix and lime juice to your glass over ice, top with sparkling water, stir gently, and garnish. For more mocktail builds, see our hydrating mocktails guide.
Recipe 5: Watermelon Margarita Pitcher (Serves 6)
- 5 sachets OFTN Watermelon Margarita mix
- 10 oz blanco tequila
- 2 oz triple sec
- 4 oz fresh lime juice
- 16 oz cold water
- Watermelon cubes, lime wheels, and mint for garnish
Instructions: Combine everything in a large pitcher and stir until the mix is fully dissolved. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Serve over ice in salt-rimmed glasses. Drop watermelon cubes into the pitcher as garnish — they'll continue to add flavor as the party goes on. Stocking up for a big event? Our 36-pack is perfect for pitchers and parties.
Recipe 6: Watermelon Mezcal Margarita
- 1 sachet OFTN Watermelon Margarita mix
- 1.5 oz mezcal
- 0.5 oz tequila
- Ice
- Smoked salt rim
Instructions: The smoky quality of mezcal adds depth to watermelon in a way that feels almost savory — like the difference between fresh watermelon and a watermelon that's been grilled. The smoked salt rim amplifies this. Shake with ice, strain into a rocks glass over a large ice cube, and garnish with a charred lime.
Recipe 7: Watermelon Margarita Paloma Hybrid
- 1 sachet OFTN Watermelon Margarita mix
- 2 oz tequila
- 2 oz grapefruit juice
- 1 oz sparkling water
- Ice
Instructions: This is what happens when a margarita and a paloma fall in love. The grapefruit juice adds bitterness that cuts through the sweetness and makes the whole drink feel more complex. Shake the tequila, OFTN mix, and grapefruit juice over ice, then top with sparkling water. Serve in a tall glass.
